Choose the right domain name



Anyone looking for the right domain name has a lot of challenges and questions ahead?  Choose the right domain name for your business.

First, what is your niche and what type of online business are you going to setup?

Second, what are extension names? Which name do I use and is this really important?

What is a domain name?

But first, we have to know what a domain name is!  According to Wikipedia, a domain is the following.

A domain name is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control within the Internet. Domain names are formed by the rules and procedures of the Domain Name System (DNS). Any name registered in the DNS is a domain name.

Visiting the page does get a tad technical.  But, in non-technical layman’s terms, it means a name for your website for whatever purpose you desire!

What are extension names?

  2. .org
  3. .net
  4. .edu
  5. .gov
  6. .biz
  7. .info

These are top level domains or TLD’s for short.  Without getting too
technical it is basically the last part of a domain name.  Example, is a TLD.  See graphic.

A .com extension is open to anyone and for any reason.  This type of name is recognized by just about everyone doing business online. If you are going to do any type of online business like selling, eCommerce, services or marketing it is best to choose the .com extension.  One more BIG factor is most people will remember this type of name.

The .org extension is typically for an organization website.  If you are looking to build a non-profit website this is the extension to use.  There is no restriction on using this name, this means you can still use it for a profitable or marketing venture.

Next is the .net name. This is used for networking business.  Most large brick and mortar businesses should use this name.  But, can be used for a commercial or marketing website.

What about Edu or Gov names?

The .edu domain is used primarily for affiliated educational U.S. institutions. I would not purchase this type of extension unless you or your organization and are indeed a non-profit educational system.  According to “

Another extension that should not be used for marketers is the .gov name. According to you cannot purchase this type of name because…

Having a managed domain name such as .gov assures your customers that they are accessing an official US Government Site.

In addition to their rule, there is a hefty $400.00 dollar annual fee for this name.

Other not so popular extension names

.US Can be used for commercial or personal online business in the United States.

.UK is used for commercial or businesses in the United Kingdom.  It is an open free to use domain name.

The main reason many marketers use these names are monetary.  You can purchase these for as little $1.00 USD depending on where you go to purchase.

Name extension tips for online marketing?

Before purchasing a domain name here are a few tips to help you get there.

Do your best to purchase a .com extension.  Not a .org or .net or the newest .xyz extension.   These are ok if you are looking for local, or organizational, type of website that only requires a static website for an online business.

Brand name recognition is good if you are needing a large business venture. Do not use a negative connotation in any name.  If you’re using several words write them without spaces to be sure that your domain name wouldn’t be potentially offensive.

Do not use hyphens or dashes in a name.  The last thing you want is to tell someone “my website name is site dash name dash name dot com”!

Try to incorporate your niche keywords into the domain name.  For example, if you are in the fishing niche you could use the following;


The domain name length is also a big factor when it comes to finding the right oe. 20 characters is a bit too long and 3 is too short. A happy medium is between 5 and 12.

Odd sounding names are good if you want branding to be a big part of your online presence.  If this were the year 1997 and you said “Goolgle It”? people would think this person is crazy!

What about local domain name?

Local domain names are still available.  For instance, if you have a plumbing business in Denver I would highly recommend an EMD (exact match domain) name with the keyword in your name.  The keyword in this example would be “Denver”; Or;  Those names still might be available?

Using your own name as a brand name

You can and should use your name as your domain name.  For instance,  here are two famous people with a brand domain name.


You do not have to be famous in the offline world to use your name as a business brand.  There are many online marketers who are known solely for their online work.


If that’s the case for you, then go for it!  But it’s best to use a keyword in your niche especially if you are a new online entrepreneur.
